Custoza Macerato Doc Crea is Orange Wine of the Year!
The Italian orange wine of the year is the Custoza Doc 2020 "Crea Macerato" by Albino Piona. The score given on the occasion of the blind tastings of the Top 100 Best Italian wines 2024 of winemag.it is 94/100.
It is a macerated wine produced with Garganega (40%), Trebbiano (30%), Trebbianello - Tai (15%) and Incrocio Manzoni (15%) grapes from the Villafranca di Verona winery that was also awarded the title of "Cantina dell'anno Nord Italia" 2024. A reality to be known, in particular for the many interpretations of one of the less known Italian denominations but worthy of interpretations of one of the lesser known Italian appellations but worthy of being discovered, for the unique qualities of their wines: the Doc Custoza.
At the sight, the Custoza Doc 2020 "Crea Macerato" by Albino Piona has a light "orange" color: a freshly pronounced orange. The nose is very elegant, with clear hints of peach and hints of dried fruit, as well as hints of warm oriental spices. The palate, on the nose, confirms to be extremely refined, in the beautiful interplay between flavor and ripe fruit teased by a slight tannic perception, which pays tribute to the type.
Crea Macerato 2020 wins the title of Italian orange wine of the year as part of the Top 100 Guide Best Italian wines 2024 winemag.it for the grace that is able to give a type, that of wines macerated, too often at the mercy of standardizing oxidations and organoleptic deviations, in the name of "terroir" and "natural wine": nothing further from the varietal and the territory that, instead, this wine fully embodies.
Wonderfully.
